Are You Drinking Enough Water? 5 Unusual Signs of Dehydration

Water is an essential part of the human body. Our bodies are about 72 percent water and our bodies rely on it to work. Think of your body as being a machine, and the water and food that we put into it as the gas that runs that machine. Without water, your body doesn’t work.

Dehydration occurs when the body loses fluids more than the amount it is taking in. We lose water in different ways which occur when we exhale, sweat and urinate. When our body loses too much water, there can be serious consequences. Dehydration is more than just having a dry mouth or increased thirst. Studies have shown that even the mildest form of dehydration can cause headaches, difficulty concentrating, and fatigue.

There are also 5 unusual signs of dehydration.

Dry Skin. Drinking water has a positive effect on the production of blood. If your body does not get adequate amounts of water, it is not able to produce the proper amount of blood, and in turn, causes your skin to become very dry.

Fevers and Chills. Fevers and chills usually occur when there is a foreign invader in your body and your body is trying to destroy the invader. However, if you are dehydrated and your body is not getting enough water that it needs to keep its systems cool, you basically start to overheat and your body temperature will begin to rise.

Bad breath. Not getting enough water can prevent your body from producing an adequate amount of saliva. Saliva has antibacterial properties that help in combat with bacteria growth in your mouth. When the mouth cannot produce an adequate amount of saliva, the bacteria are able to thrive. Long term, the growth of bacteria in your mouth will develop into bad breath.

headacheHeadaches. Being dehydrated could be a cause of headaches. The brain is enveloped in a fluid sack that protects it from having contact with the skull.  The brain needs to water to keep it lubricated. When there is not enough water in the brain, it can rub against the skull which results in headaches.

Cravings for Sweet Foods. Being dehydrated can be difficult for some organs, such as the liver, to release glycogen, which is a form of glucose that stores energy. When your body has a lack of glycogen, you can experience cravings for sweet foods.

If you feel as though you’re not getting enough water, try these tips:

• Keep your water bottle handy and with you. If you have it next to you, you’ll likely get a sip or two in without even thinking about it. Also, if you know that you will be away from home for a few hours, take a full water bottle with you. This way you will be more likely to drink water and stay away from sodas. Ozark is my favorite water bottle. They’re fairly inexpensive and keep your water cold for hours!




• Spice up your water. Sometimes we become bored with just plain water. Try adding a splash of fruit juice or chunks of fresh or frozen fruit. A water infuser bottle is a great way to go.

• Eat more produce. Many vegetables and fruits contain a large amount of water. Try to make your plate at least half of these vegetables and fruit.
